Hughes Model 500, OH-6 "Cayuse"

Originating in 1960, the Hughes OH-6 "Cayuse"(also known as the "Loach"), was designed for the U.S Army as a light, maneuverable observation helicopter. Its distinctive tadpole bubble canopy and fuselage design held the pilot and passenger with room for (2) additional passengers on folding seats in a small, but useful cargo area. The Army started receiving the OH-6 in 1966, with over 1,400 utilized very effectively in Vietnam as forward controllers for artillery and aircraft strike missions. It was also credited with daring rescues of downed aircraft pilots and crew members with its ability to dart in and out of small remote areas. Powered by a single turbine engine, its maximum air speed is 150 mph and has an operating range of 360 miles. It could also be armed with a .30 caliber, M-60 machine gun. A later version known as the Model 500MD "Defender" was developed with larger horsepower, room for (7) and armed with TOW or Stinger missiles. The "Defender" also has infra-red exhaust reduction and advanced flight and fire control avionics.
