Bell Model 47 "Whirly Bird"

 

First flown in 1945, the Bell Model 47 was the first helicopter in the world to receive a certification for civil use. Accepted by the U.S. Air Force in 1947, (28) "Whirly Birds" were received for evaluation, although limited in capacity, both the U.S Army and Navy followed placing orders for this inexpensive and simplistic helicopter. Distinctive with is light weight wiry air frame and bubble canopy, it provided the military services a inexpensive helicopter for use in landing on ships and remote areas. One of its first important roles was improving the survival rate of critically wounded soldiers and sailors from ships or front lines with medical evacuation to better medical facilities. Powered by only a 6 cylinder, 260 hp, piston engine with a maximum air speed of 105 mph and a range of 250 miles.
