Tank M-26 "Pershing"

Another important tank developed and that served in Europe during late World War II, was the M26 "General Pershing" tank. This medium 40 ton tank was designed in 1943, was powered by a 450 hp Ford engine and had a maximum speed of 25 mph. Hosting a 90mm cannon, that fired armored piecing projectiles at 3,300 feet per second and protected with steel armor up to 4.5 inches thick quickly proved its worth late in WWII against the German Tiger and Panther tanks. Post WWII found the M26 "Pershing" upgrade with a 800 hp 12, cylinder engine, transmission and sub systems being redesignated as the "M46 General Patton" in 1946. It quickly became the main available tank armament during the initial breakout of the Korean War until the introduction of the M-47, "Patton" in late 1950.
