Vought F-8 "Crusader"

Developed in 1955 as a carrier based aircraft, the F-8 "Crusader" was a supersonic fighter with a maximum air speed of 1,230 to 1,580 mph and advanced radar or heat seeking air to air missile avionics. However, introduction of the "Crusader" coincided with the development of the McDonnell-Douglas F-4 "Phantom" and as a result approximately only 1,400 were manufactured for 8 years before ceasing production in 1965. It was powered by a single Pratt&Whitney turbojet that generated 18,000 lbs of thrust and had a flight radius of 600 miles. Armed with (4) 20mm Colt cannons, 4 side-winder air to air missiles, or (12) 250 lb bombs or (8) 500 lb bombs, the F-8 was a formable performer. Its involvement in the Vietnam War with service in Navy and Marines squadrons as a tactical offensive fighters or reconnassiance roles.
