Leonard R. Spiewak *** U.S. Marines *** Cuba 1964-1968

After Boot Camp at Parris Island in June 1964, Leonard served with the 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines, 2nd Marine Division out of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Amphibious training and deployment also continued with the LSD-USS Raleigh and Heli-Transport USS Okinawa. In the 1960's the "Cold War" and just 90 miles off shore Cuba was a security concern of the United States. The Naval and Marine base at Gauntanmo Bay is an isolated outpost representing America determination to maintain its presence in Castro's Cuba. As a Motor Transport Specialist he served at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba in 1965 and again in 1967. Discharged as a Sergeant in June 1968.
