George D. Calebaugh *** U.S. Army Air Corps***
1943-1946
Prior to entering
the U.S. Army Air Corps, George Calebaugh was a machinist at the
General Electric Plant in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. On March
4, 1943 he was drafted into the U.S. Army Air Corps and began
basic training at Kearn's, Utah. His machinist skills were to
be utilized by the Army's Air Corps Aviation Construction Battalion
and in June of 1943 was transferred to Kerney, Nebraska for additional
training. Later, after attending heavy equipment and caterpillar
school in Spokane, Washington he was stationed in Blackfoot, Idaho
where he built his first of many airstrips. By October of 1943,
George was in the Pacific serving with the 865th Engineers in
Company H or S and for the remainder WII constructed or repaired
airstrips. The 865th Engineers airstrips were often occupied by
the Army's Air Corps 49th, F.I.S, Fighter Interceptor
Squadron that landed their Curtiss
P-40 "Warhawk," North American P-51 "Mustang"
and the Lockheed P-38 "Lighting" on airstrips constructed
in New Guinea, the Dutch West Indies and the Philippine Islands.
George was honorably discharged as a Corporal on January 20, 1946.
