M-8 "Armored Car"

In 1941, the U.S. Army selected the Ford Motor Division design for a light weight armored car. Designated the M8, it began manufacture in March of 1943 and by the wars end over 11,000 units had been produced. Powered by a 110 hp, gasoline engine, the M8 in Europe was highly successful negotiating just about any type of terrain due to its 6x6 wheel drive capability. Operated by a crew of (4), its maximum speed was 55 mph and had a range of 350 miles. Armed with a 37mm anti-tank cannon, .50 and .30 caliber machine guns, the M8 was well suited for reconnaissance and combative roles. Its major criticism by crews was the light weight armor, (less than .5 inch) especially the under side where it was very vulnerable to mines. Crews were noted to line the floor with sand bags to increased their survival rate.
