Convair F-106 "Delta Dart"

In 1954, out of the Convair F-102 "Delta Dagger" (an aircraft program which was failing development and delivery expectations.) The F-106 "Delta Dart"emerged from the F-102 and became at that time the premier deterrent, all-weather, defensive fighter serving from 1959 and being retrofitted until the 1980's. Its Electronic Control Systems ECS was state of the art. The MA-1, Fire Control System could strike enemy aircraft with (4) air to air missiles or fire a nuclear armed missile from an internal bay in the fuselage. Other armament included a .30 caliber, (6) barreled mini-gun. The aircraft was powered by a single Pratt&Whitney or (2) General Electric after-burning jet engines, with thrust exceeding 25,000 lbs pushing the aircraft over Mach 2 or 1,500 mph. Although considered heavy with slow acceleration, it was also plagued by engine malfunctions, and it needed long take-off and landing runways. The electronic MA-1 fire-controll system was finicky and required frequent calibration.
